And why is it so important?
A plenary indulgence is the full remission of the temporal punishment due to sin, which has already been forgiven through confession.
For the first week of November (Nov. 1–8), the indulgenced act can be either visiting a cemetery
and praying for the departed or visiting a church and reciting the Our Father and the Creed.
The conditions for receiving a plenary indulgence are as follows…
State of grace and detachment from sin: Be in the state of grace with a complete interior detachment from all sin, even venial sin.
Sacramental confession: Receive the sacrament of confession within about 20 days before or after the act.
Holy Communion: Receive Holy Communion, preferably on the day of the act.
Prayer for the Holy Father’s intentions: Recite prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father. The Our Father and a Hail Mary are suggested minimums.
You can gain a plenary indulgence each day you visit a cemetery between November 1-8! These indulgences are applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory.
There are tons of cemeteries close by! Drive through on your way home from work or go for an evening walk (added benefit of some fresh fall air and exercise!).
